According to an internal investigation by the Department of Veteran Affairs, around 100,000 veterans have been facing wait times much longer than intended. It has been found that these wait times were the result of altered appointment records intended to falsify performance reports.
Veteran Affairs (VA) aims to allow their patients to be seen within 14 days of requesting an appointment. This internal audit found that some patients were waiting up to 90 days for treatment, and that thousands of patients seeking care were never given an appointment.
The audit was first flagged at the Phoenix VA hospital where a retired doctor began to raise red flags. At this hospital, the VA is investigating 18 deaths that may have been caused because the patients were awaiting doctor’s appointments, but were never seen.
So far, the audit has found that 90 VA out-patient clinics. Several of these sites had staff members that claimed they felt threatened and coerced into altering the documents.
This scandal has already led to Eric Shinseki, the former secretary of Veteran Affairs to resign.
