In early June, Florida doctors were being cited left and right for negligence and malpractice by the Florida Board of Medicine. Orlando family physician, Dr. Aileen Norgell, was cited for misdiagnosing and providing inadequate treatment to an inmate at the Brevard County Jail. She was fined $10,000 and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service. An anesthesiologist, Dr. Parul Patel, was fined $10,00 and ordered to perform 25 hours of community service for his failure to properly diagnose and treat a gastric-bypass patient.
An obstetrician, Dr. Robert Lemert, was fined $5,000 and required to perform 25 hours of community service for not following accepted medical practices involving a high-risk pregnancy, and Dr. Sarfraz Mirza, convicted of trafficking Oxycodone (a narcotic pain medication), surrendered his medical license. Dr. Jerry Rubin, who operated on the wrong part of a patient’s finer, has to pay a settlement of $7,000 and lecture other doctors on the topic of “wrong site surgeries.”
