The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations created World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) in 2006 to raise awareness about the multitudes of elders being neglected and abused each year.
The Administration on Aging reports that an estimated $2.6 billion is lost each year due to elder financial exploitation and abuse. Because of this, elders are not using these funds for simple necessities like food, medication, and housing.
The goal of raising awareness about this subject is so communities will pay greater attention to elderly abuse, both within the home or in the case of nursing home injuries and abuse.
Communities are encouraged to do the following to participate in WEAAD:
- Educate those in the community
- Volunteer with seniors or in nursing homes
- Promote the subject using social media and other forms of communication
