According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 726 bicyclist fatalities and over 49,000 bicyclist injuries in 2012, which was a 6% increase from 2011. The statistics also show that these bicycle-vehicle accidents mostly occurred between 4pm and 11:59pm. With this information as a cautionary tale, the NHTSA is encouraging all bicyclists and automobile drivers to practice safety when sharing the road.
The NHTSA offers the following suggestions to increase safety while riding a bike on a roadway:
- Always wear a helmet
- Wear reflective clothing
- Ride with the flow of traffic; not against it
- Ride alert and not under the influence
- Obey traffic signals and signage
- Use hand signals while riding
