On June 3, yesterday, Maytag Corp. issued a recall of about 1.7 million dishwashers because of reports that they can cause fires. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, they have electrical problems with their heating elements. Maytag has said it received 12 reports of heating element failures that caused fires and damage to the dishwasher. In one case, there was also extensive damage to the person’s kitchen.
They were sold between February 2006 and April 2010, for prices ranging between $250 and $900, with the brand names of:
- Magic Chef
- Performa by Maytag
You can see the brand name on the front of your dishwasher. They came with black, white, stainless steel, or bisque front panels. To determine if your dishwasher is one of the recalled models, check its serial number, found on the left side of the door frame. The recalled machines have serial numbers:
- Starting with NW39 through NW52 or NY01 through NY19
- Ending with any of: JC, JE, JG, JJ, JL, JN, JP, JR, JT, JV, JX, LA, LC, LE, LG, LJ, LL, LN, LP, LR, LT, LV, LX, NA, NC, NE, NG, NJ, NL, NN, NP, NR.
If you find that yours is one of the recalled numbers, stop using it immediately. Also disconnect it from the power supply. You can do that by shutting off its circuit breaker or by pulling out its fuse.
Maytag has said it will repair recalled dishwashers in your house, at no charge. Alternatively, you can get a rebate for it if you want to buy a new one that has a stainless steel interior. The rebates can be either:
- $150 if you buy a new model MDB7759, MDB7609 or MDBH979; or
- $250 if you buy a new model MDB8959, MDB8859, MDB7809 or MDB7709.
For either of these solutions, call Maytag at 1.800.544.5513. Maytag asks that you do not take the dishwasher back to the retailer who sold it to you, as their retailers are not prepared for such returns.
