A local Mobile woman was hit this week as she tried to cross the street in downtown Mobile. The cause of the accident is still unknown, but brings to mind important reminders about pedestrian safety.

The vehicle-pedestrian impact sent the woman flying and she landed several feet away from the vehicle. She was then rushed to the hospital.

When you are out, either on foot or on a bicycle, it is important to remember to scan for safety at all times. The best way to steer clear of distracted drivers and avoid personal injury is to keep yourself focused on the road you are about to cross.

Always ensure that you’re walking or biking on the correct side of the street; on the sidewalk when available. Before crossing a street, always do the following:

  • Look for traffic in both directions
  • Ensure that vehicles coming can see you
  • Make eye contact with drivers to make certain they see you and know you’re about to cross
  • Keep aware while crossing the street

The tragedy that occurred to this local Mobile woman can be easily avoided through pedestrian awareness.
