The USPlabs recall focuses on OxyElite Pro products, which are used for weight-loss and muscle-building and which have been sold in stores nationwide and online. The recall includes:
- OxyElite Pro Super Thermo capsules
- OxyElite Pro Ultra-Intense Thermo capsules
- OxyElite Pro Super Thermo powder
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the products have been connected to serious liver damage and acute liver failure. The health risks may be linked to aegeline, an ingredient the FDA says “lacks a history of use or other evidence of safety.”
For a complete list of the affected OxyElite products and their corresponding UPC codes, please see the FDA OxyElite recall page. Although most of the reports of complications—which include one death—have stemmed from Hawaii, the FDA reports that cases of liver damage after the use of OxyElite Pro products containing aegeline have “been found in a number of other states.”
The potential health risks associated with OxyElite Pro and another dietary supplement marketed as VERSA-1 are so severe that the FDA for only the second time threatened a legal order to immediately stop the distribution of these supplements if a voluntary recall was not initiated.
