According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, supplements that have been recalled by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) are still being sold. The study found at least 27 supplements that were still available for online purchase in 2013 even after being recalled at some point between 2009 and 2012.
Most of these supplements were intended to aid in erectile dysfunction, weight loss, or bodybuilding. However, many of these recalled supplements were found to have chemicals in them that were proven to cause heart attacks or strokes, so they were recalled.
This study claims that the FDA needs to get more involved in enforcing recalled supplements, not just prescription drugs. There was even a statement issued by Daniel Fabricant, the executive director of the Natural Products Association, stating that there should be stronger enforcement of recalled supplements being removed from the market and swifter, harsher penalties assigned when they’re not taken from the market.
