In a voluntary recall, Blue Bell Creameries are recalling nearly 8 million gallons of its products all across the country. The recall is due to the fact that listeria was found in tests done at a few of their production plants. There have been at least 10 cases of a person becoming ill due to listeria ingestion from the Blue Bell products.
Listeria will cause the worst symptoms in pregnant women, the elderly, or those that are already immunodeficient due to cancer treatments or other diseases. Listeria causes fever, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, and back pain. It can be fatal if it goes untreated for too long or causes excessively-severe dehydration.
The Blue Bell Creamery recall includes ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet, and other frozen treats and has been extended to at least 23 states, including Alabama. The recall also extends beyond the United States.
